"A Conversation on Victims’ Rights" Panel Discussion
In honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles partnered with the Georgia Office of Victim Services (GOVS), the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, and Georgia State University. GOVS led a successful panel discussion titled, “A Conversation on Victims’ Rights," which included GOVS staff, local law enforcement members, prosecuting attorneys, victim advocates, and a victim/survivor.
The 2023 theme for National Crime Victims' Rights Week was, "Survivor Voices: Elevate. Engage. Effect Change." The conversation highlighted the importance of amplifying the voices of crime victims and survivors and the rights they have at each stage of the criminal justice process.
Parole Board Member David Herring attended the event and said, "National Crime Victims' Rights Week provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the impact of crime on victims and their families. We must never forget that victims are at the center of the criminal justice system, and we must do everything we can to ensure that their voices are heard, and their rights are protected. The services provided by the Georgia Office of Victim Services ensure victims are heard," stated Herring.
