Served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Squad Leader, earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, among other decorations. Began his career with the State of Georgia in 1974. Successfully served as a parole-probation officer, Assistant Chief of the Atlanta Parole Office, Hearing Examiner, Guidelines Director, Assistant Chief of Field Operations and Division Director. Served as the Director of Highway Safety in 1997 and appointed to serve as a member of the United States Parole Commission in 1999.
