Atlanta, GA – The Southern States Correctional Association (SSCA), representing 14 states, is coming to Savannah for its annual summer training conference this weekend. The SSCA Summer Training Conference will be July 20 – 23, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah.

Mitzi Kellum, SSCA President, says it will be one of the largest training conferences in the organization’s history.

“We’re expecting more than 600 participants to join us from not only our member states but from law enforcement across the country. The Georgia host committee has worked for the last year preparing a great conference and exciting training opportunities for our membership. We’re bringing in experts on their respective topics from across the country to provide these training opportunities,” Kellum said.

Lisa Lance, Director of Training for the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, and program committee chair, says the training program is geared toward correctional employees.

“We have training sessions focusing on our employees’ mental and physical health and job readiness,” Lance said.

The SSCA Georgia Host Committee consists largely of staff from the Parole Board and the Department of Corrections.

Michael Nail, Executive Director of Parole, says it will be a great training conference because of the work done by the host committee.

“As expected, our staff and that of the Department of Corrections has stepped up and delivered. We are ready to welcome SSCA to Savannah and to Georgia,” Nail said.

SSCA consists of more than 1,200 members who are law enforcement professionals working for youth and adult correctional agencies, probation and parole authorities and professionals who are counselors, teachers, administrators and volunteers. The SSCA member states are:

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
