The Georgia Office of Victim Services Award and Denim Day Recognition

The Georgia Office of Victim Services (GOVS) and the Georgia Parole Board completed a successful National Crime Victims' Rights Week. GOVS was awarded the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council's, Georgia Crime Victim Service Collaborative and Innovative Project Award. The significant contributions GOVS has made to the lives of victims were specifically acknowledged through the Victim Impact Sessions held in individual judicial circuits. These sessions provide victims/survivors with an opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with a Georgia Parole Board Member, a hearing examiner, and a GOVS staff member, allowing victims to express how the crime has affected them. The Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia was the co-honoree representing the individual district attorneys GOVS worked with to host the Victim Impact Sessions.

Additionally, Parole Vice-Chair Jacqueline Bunn and staff showed their support for survivors and raised awareness about sexual assault by participating in Denim Day, a movement that originated in response to a 1998 ruling by the Italian Supreme Court. By wearing denim, they made a visible statement against victim-blaming and joined the global effort to challenge misconceptions surrounding sexual violence.
