Elected State Senator for the 43rd District, serving from 1984-1992. Was the first African American to hold the position of Majority Whip for the Georgia Senate. He has held the positions of Vice President of Personnel and Community Relations at DeKalb College; Executive Vice President at DeKalb Technical Institute; and, Associate Superintendent for the Administration of Affirmative Development and Community and System Services for the DeKalb County School System. From January 1995 until April 1999, he served as Commissioner of Juvenile Justice.

Married to Patricia Carter Walker. They have two children.
