Atlanta - The State Board of Pardons and Paroles has announced the appointment of Thurman Henderson as Executive Special Assistant to the Board.

Henderson’s career in state service spans more than 40 years, 32 of which have been in the field of criminal justice.

Henderson  began his professional career with the Griffin Area Psycho-Educational Center as a social worker in 1975. He began his law enforcement career with the State Board of Pardons and Paroles as a parole officer in 1983. He was promoted to the position of hearing examiner in 1990 and to senior hearing examiner in 2000. In July of 2005, he was promoted to his current position of assistant director of Clemency Operations.  

Executive Director of Parole Christopher Barnett says, “Mr. Henderson has provided outstanding service to the agency for many years. His wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of clemency, field operations, legal services and communications will be a tremendous asset to the Board in his new role.”

Henderson is a 1974 graduate of Kentucky State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Henderson served as a member of the security detail for the 1996 Olympics.

He is the recipient of the 2001 Tommy Morris Distinguished Service Award. In August 2007, Henderson completed the University Of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute Of Government Executive Leadership Program.

Henderson resides in Decatur, Georgia, where he is an active member in his community. He is a member of Saint Philips A.M.E. Church in Decatur and serves on the Stewards Board of the Church. He is also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated; Eta Omega Chapter, Atlanta, Georgia.   

Mr. Henderson’s appointment is effective September 1, 2015.
